This is a series of paintings I have been working on since
1989. If you look at these images in their chronological order,
you will notice a progression from realism to abstraction. In
the first paintings I observed how things looked to me, and I
expressed my ideas rather than my emotions. Also, I
exercised more control over the application of the paint using
brushes. The later paintings really painted themselves, using
me as a medium through which they came to life. Later I was
mostly painting with my bare hands, sometimes my whole
body. On occasion this even resulted in physical injury to
myself.

"Sanchez Hill" is many things at once: It is the view of this hill from the distance, but also
the distance as seen from the hilltop and from the different places I visit during my walks
on the hill. In some places the incline is so steep that staircases replace the garden
lined streets. This painting is also about the feelings that the different houses and
gardens and panoramic views evoke in me. All of this happens over time: In the sunshine
and at night, during the different seasons of the year. This is a portrait of one of my
favorite places in San Francisco, and at the same time it is a portrait of myself.
